Accessibility
This site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. Colour contrast is checked on every build, and every page can be read with JavaScript turned off.
What we build to
The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. That is the level most public accessibility requirements refer to, and it is what this site is designed and checked against.
What is in place
Some of this is checked automatically every time the site is built, which means it cannot quietly stop being true.
- Every colour pairing is measured against the level AA minimum of 4.5 to 1. A pairing below it fails the build, so it cannot reach the site.
- Every page can be read with JavaScript turned off, and nothing is hidden behind a script, including the navigation menu on small screens. The calculators and the enquiry form need it to work. Without it, the form gives our phone number and email instead.
- A skip link is the first stop in the tab order, and every link, button and control shows a visible focus ring.
- Headings run in order, with one heading level one per page, and the page uses landmarks so a screen reader can move between regions.
- Every button, form field and standalone link can be tapped anywhere in an area at least 44 pixels square. Links inside a paragraph of text are the one exception the guidelines allow, and they are spaced far enough apart to tap on their own.
- Every animation stops for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion. None of it carries meaning, so nothing is lost.
- Images carry alternative text, or are marked as decorative when they add nothing to the page. Every image has its dimensions set, so the layout does not jump while it loads.
- Text can be resized, and the layout reflows rather than forcing you to scroll sideways.
Where this statement stops
This describes what has been built and tested. It is not the result of an independent audit, and no third party has assessed the site.
Automated checks catch contrast, structure and markup. They do not catch whether a description is genuinely useful, or whether a page makes sense read aloud from top to bottom. That needs a person, and it is worth doing.
